Unity

Dominant in mobile gaming and hugely popular with indie and mid-size studios across 2D and 3D, thanks to its broad platform reach and gentle learning curve; still recovering community trust after the 2023 pricing controversy, though adoption has remained broadly stable through 2026.

Unreal Engine

The default choice for high-fidelity AAA console and PC titles, and increasingly used outside games entirely for film/TV virtual production, thanks to its best-in-class rendering.

Godot

The fastest-growing open-source alternative to Unity, particularly popular with indie developers who want a free, vendor-independent engine after Unity’s pricing controversy accelerated its adoption.

GameMaker

A popular choice for 2D indie games specifically, with a long track record of commercially successful titles built by very small teams or solo developers.

Construct

Popular for browser-based games, game jams, and education, valued for how quickly a playable 2D game can be built without writing code.

CryEngine

Used primarily by Crytek’s own titles and a smaller set of studios seeking top-tier visual fidelity, with much smaller overall adoption than Unity or Unreal.

Cocos Creator

Widely used for mobile and mini-games, especially in the Chinese market, including on platforms like WeChat.

Bevy

Adopted by a growing community of Rust developers and hobbyists building smaller 2D/3D games, valued for its modern architecture even though it’s not yet considered production-ready for large, complex titles by every team.

Defold

Used by a smaller but dedicated community for lightweight 2D and hybrid mobile games, valued specifically for its small build sizes and consistent cross-platform behavior.
