Host Language and Ecosystem

The primary programming language, framework, and ecosystem each templating engine is associated with.

Pug

Pug is a JavaScript templating language most commonly used with Node.js, historically popular as the default view engine for Express applications. Its adoption today is largely tied to the Node.js server-side ecosystem.

Mustache

Mustache is a language-agnostic specification rather than a single implementation, with libraries available for JavaScript, Ruby, Python, PHP, Java, and many other languages. This portability makes it a common choice when the same template logic needs to render consistently across multiple platforms.

Handlebars

Handlebars originated in and is primarily used within the JavaScript/Node.js ecosystem, both for server-side rendering and historically for client-side templating. Ports exist for other languages, but its core community and tooling are JavaScript-centric.

Blade

Blade is tightly coupled to Laravel and exists specifically as that PHP framework’s official templating engine. It is not commonly used outside of Laravel applications.

ERB

ERB is Ruby’s built-in templating library and serves as the default view templating engine for Ruby on Rails, though it can also be used standalone in any Ruby program. Its ecosystem is almost entirely Ruby and Rails-centric.

Django Templates

Django Templates are the built-in template engine shipped with Django, Python’s popular web framework, and are used by default in Django projects unless swapped out for Jinja2. Its ecosystem is scoped to Django applications.

Jinja2

Jinja2 is a standalone Python templating engine that can be used independent of any framework, but it is best known as the default templating engine for Flask and is also supported as an alternative engine within Django. Its syntax and design were themselves influenced by Django Templates.

EJS

EJS is a JavaScript templating engine used primarily in Node.js applications, often alongside Express as an alternative to Pug for teams that prefer plain HTML with embedded JavaScript over indentation-based syntax. Its ecosystem is entirely JavaScript/Node.js-based.

Twig

Twig is a PHP templating engine created for and tightly integrated with the Symfony framework, serving as Symfony’s default view layer. It is also usable outside Symfony in standalone PHP projects.

Thymeleaf

Thymeleaf is a Java templating engine most commonly used with the Spring framework, particularly Spring Boot, for server-rendered web applications. Its “natural templating” design lets designers open templates as plain HTML files directly in a browser.

Edge.js

Edge is a Node.js templating engine built by and for the AdonisJS framework, executing entirely server-side so templates can access framework features like authentication before emitting static HTML to the browser.
